Instagram Stories surpasses Snapchat’s daily active users

Eight short months after Instagram Stories launched and the feature is already more popular than the app it shamelessly copied. The Facebook-owned social network on Thursday announced Stories has more than 200 million daily users, up from 150 million in January. By comparison, Snapchat has nearly 160 million daily active users, according to last count.

To celebrate the milestone, Instagram on Thursday unveiled new sticker tools that are—you guessed it—inspired by features first introduced by Snapchat. Here are the new features as explained by Instagram:

Selfie sticker: When you take a photo or video and tap the smiley face, you’ll see a new sticker with a camera icon that lets you capture a mini-selfie. Before or after capturing, tap to apply different frame styles: fade or circle. Put your selfie sticker anywhere, adjust the size and use as many other creative tools as you want.

Pinning: You can also take your selfie sticker to the next level by pinning it to a specific spot in your video. Just tap and hold the sticker, move it over any object and confirm by tapping “Pin.” Pinning works with any sticker and text, and it’s extra fun with Boomerang and hands-free video. You can even pin multiple things in the same video.

Geostickers continue to roll out

In addition to selfie stickers and pinning, Instagram is also bringing geostickers to four new cities, including Chicago, London, Madrid, and Tokyo. The geostickers should be available in the coming days, according to Instagram.

Clearly, Instagram Stories is becoming more popular by the day, which is to be expected considering the social network boasts over 600 million users. I’ve already talked about why I no longer use Snapchat now that Instagram Stories is available, and I suspect many users are in the same boat, as evidenced by the growing user base.
